Pressing Iran

One of my favorite columnists Charles Krauthammer wants the pressure on Iran to continue and I think his article makes a lot of sense:
"The military option may not be necessary right now. If weaponization has been suspended, the window for sanctions has been widened. But there is no reasonable argument for taking military action off the table. If the Iranians refuse to negotiate seriously [...] the military option needs to be on the table and in plain view."
It's a very good read!

Those pressures that you support, will crush the ordinary Iranian public, and would leave the Iranian decision-makers intact.

Then if the mullah-decision-makers CARE for the well-being of the people of Iran (which I know they never did), they should abandon their wrong policies/ambitions and allow the Iranian people to choose their path to liberty and democracy. Otherwise you can't expect the world community to allow the crane-hanging-mullahs of Tehran to continue this destructive path towards annihilation of the western world.

Although I don't foresee the Iranian mad-man president Ahmadinejad backing off his egotistical plans of a blood-bath, I believe Israel is the main power holder to enforce what actions are necessary to defend themselves, and regardless of what Liberal mantrasizing, we have a right to stand behind Israel and aid them as necessary, if it be militarily in man power or otherwise.

I don't see any reason as to why the "good-hearted" west should crush the innocent Iranian people to test the mullahs.

Democracy and liberty that you talk about is not about the west deciding what are "wrong policies/ambitions" or right policies of Iran. Democracy is about the ordinary Iranians deciding what is right for them.

The pressure that you currently support will crush those ordinary people and will undermine their strength of expressing themselves.

Ordinary Iranians including my family back home are already crushed by the mullahs after they hijacked the country in 1979. The pressure on the akhoonds/mullahs must increase until they either behave like civilized men or give up power and go back to Qum to preach. I am all for increasing the pressure, sanctions and military stick against these crowd of criminals. Ordinary Iranians HAVE no right under the rule of these criminal clerics and therefore can't express their ideas any ways. One of the ways to help the people of Iran is to tighten the noose around the regime's neck. Like I said, if the regime CARES, then they should stop their nuclear activities immediately, otherwise they're responsible for the ORDINARY people being hurt.

Sanction looks like a sandwich: the mullahs are one side of the bun, the west is the other. The ordinary people I talked about are sandwiched between the two. No matter who exerts pressure (the mullahs, or the west), it is the ordinary people (your family and mine) who will feel the pressure. If you support the pressure by the west, it is as if you are supporting pressure by the mullahs. Neither mullahs, nor the west is going to feel the pressure.

I disagree. Mullahs deserve to be pressed until they behave like human beings (which I doubt they ever will). Pressure must continue... I am glad there are governments in Washington, Paris and Berlin with balls to press these crane-hanging-criminals of Tehran to abide by the int'l law. Iranian people afterall are paying the price of their deadly mistake back in 1979. Moreover, these international sanctions will bring about that much needed regime change. We'll see!

You're right again, Winston!

You don't care about Iranian people or democracy. You want to punish Iranian people because they made a "deadly mistake back in 1979". You just said it:

"Iranian people afterall are paying the price of their deadly mistake back in 1979"

You want to discipline them because they expelled the shah, right? Very undemocratic move!!!! because you didn't like it. Very undemocratic.

The proposed sanctions are smart. It won't target civilians, it will definitely target the leadership and IRGC assets and individuals. And no, I don't want the people be punished for their past mistake. I don't have that power. But the Iranian people have that chance to prove to the world that these crazy mullahs are not their choice.

since when the U.S and mr Bush have the right to tell the world how to live? how to chose their religion or way of life?
you've simplified the problem only in matter of Iranian ppls.
how come other small countries have always solved their problems whithout the "divine" help of u.s?
don't u think that u're treating that bullshit american way too subjectif?

Sorry, Winston, I think amir is right on this one. When sanctions were put on Iraq, the target was the Baathists but Saddam corrupted the whole thing and it was ordinary Iraqis who bore the brunt of those sanctions while Saddam and his sons lived in palaces drinking beer and looking at porn. With that glaring example, how can you be sure international sanctions would not have the same effect in Iran? I think we need some effort, even if it is clandestine, that will get ordinary Iranians to get off their asses and overthrow the mullahs they way they overthrew the Shah in '79.
