Mark Steyn takes on Iran

An article written by Mark Steyn just brought to my attention by an annonymous reader of my weblog.

He's got it again, right on.

Facing Down Iran - Our lives depend on it

I am just putting a few sentences of this neat article out here:

"If Belgium becomes a nuclear power, the Dutch have no reason to believe it would be a factor in, say, negotiations over a joint highway project. But Iran’s nukes will be a factor in everything. If you think, for example, the European Union and others have been fairly craven over those Danish cartoons, imagine what they’d be like if a nuclear Tehran had demanded a formal apology, a suitable punishment for the newspaper, and blasphemy laws specifically outlawing representations of the Prophet. Iran with nukes will be a suicide bomber with a radioactive waist."
And
"The lesson of the Danish cartoons is the clearest reminder that what is at stake here is the credibility of our civilization."
Indeed, this is a must read for any one who really wants to know what's at stake if Iran becomes nuclear armed.

Read it and please pass it to others!

It's very good, as Steyn always is.

But I have to disagree with, "Nor should we put much stock in the country’s allegedly “pro-American” youth. This shouldn’t be a touchy-feely nation-building exercise: rehabilitation may be a bonus, but the primary objective should be punishment—and incarceration."

I think it can and should be both.
It wouldn't be a "nation-building exercise" as we have in Iraq.
I think we can and should support the freedom-loving Iranian opposition to overthrow this regime and punish those in authority now.

I am glad you posted Steyn's article, you may want to read Tahiri's take on Iran and why we Iranian have our hatred toward the wrong American president:

The “Grand Bargain” as Khatami saw it would create a mini-Yalta under which the Islamic republic and the US would divide the Middle East into their respective zones of influence. Tehran would be recognized as “the regional superpower” with a dominant position in Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. It would also preserve its special relationship with Oman, the only country to have signed a security pact with Iran. The US would further acknowledge Iran’s presence in the United Arab Emirates, chiefly Dubai.

In exchange, the Islamic republic would not interfere with the flow of oil from the Gulf, would tone down its opposition to the Israel-Palestine peace efforts, and would not use terrorism against the US and its allies. Under the “Grand Bargain” the US would end up as the dominant power in Egypt, Jordan, Israel, the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.
