Shah's Iran

Today Shah's Iran doesn't look bad:
Iran's record on education was notable. The literacy rate in 1955 was somewhere below 10 percent. The Shah's regime tried to make available primary school education covering 100 percent of the children. The literacy rate at the end of his time was about 80 percent.

good old days. i think the best thing an Iranian can do nowadays is to leave Iran and don`t even look back. Iran is finished. it`s been finished since 1979.

He wasn't perfect, but he was truly dedicated to making Iranians educated, proud and respected and making Iran a great modern country.

Cyrus would truely weep to see that his nation had changed little in 2400 years and was subjegated by Arabs.

Dear Winston
The literacy rate at 1979 war around %48.
I wrote this before, but I think my comment did not go through.

Whats your source, Siavash?

See for examples, Table 3 of this paper. In that table, the adult literacy rate in 1976 for male is %58.5 and for female is %35.3 , which means the adult literacy rate of the total population is around %48.

There are many other sources available that corroborate the same statistics. It is a well-known fact among sociologists.

That stat and its source is disputed

God Bless the Pahlevi family. HIH Prince Reza Pahlevi should occupy the Peacock throne! Who will rid us of these troublesome mullahs?

This stat was obtained in nation-wide census ran by Iran Stat Center which was controlled by Shah's government in 1976. So I don't think even the late Shah himself would dispute it.

As I wrote before, you can find the same stat in many other peer-reviewed papers in economics/social science journals.

Siavash

You are misleading people here. The article here talks about the rate of people who got PRIMARY EDUCATION not secondary education and I believe the article is right. 80% of iranians had primary education by 1978 which is a great thing.

Get your facts straight before posting comments, dude.

Thnx

Dear Winston,
Even in the excerpt that you posted here, it says "the literacy rate at the end of his time was about 80 percent."
The literacy rate by definition is the percentage of population over 15 who can read and write, i.e., have at least primary education.
Again you can check the following links, just a few examples, to see the actual stats yourself.

The other fact that is reported in the excerpt is not accurate either. The percentage of the children who were covered by primary education was not %100. Of course his excellency tried, but unfortunately he was not as successful.

The GDP and Income per capita was certainly higher than it is now.

Any meaningful comparative analysis of literacy rate or any other indices (economic or social) should take into account the period before the Pahlavis, the Ghajar period...
