Canada's Resolution

Canada's New Year Resolution for 2008 according to National Post newspaper:

1- A disclosure law requiring countries that abuse human rights, according to our definition, to disclose all their existing holdings in our economies, including stock market stakes, bonds or any ownership in private companies, hedge, mutual or private-equity funds.

2- Canada should impose investment bans against Saudis, Iranians and others, barring them from ownership in our economies until they reform.

3- A ban against immigration, visa work, tourism or students from these abusing countries.

Very interesting. I like what Harper's government is doing. This is putting Canada into the world again instead of fixating on our neighbours to the south, ad nauseum, not to mention that it's just plain good policy.

I certainly agree with the first two points, but not the third (at least not entirely).

Students planning to come over here and take their expertise back to their country should not be admitted if that country is a known human rights abuser. However, not allowing any immigrants from those countries could be problematic. After all, those people are emmigrating from those countries for a reason.

Quite right

So, then, are you telling me you would turn your back on Falun Gong practitioners wanting to escape Chinese persecution? You would turn your back on Lebanese Christians? Would you have refused to recieve any Afghan Jews?

Refusing to accept immigrants from these countries would be as bad for the victims of human rights abuse as persecuting them ourselves.

Patrick - If you are addressing me, I am agreeing with you.
I think the woman who wrote this article is an idiot

Whoops. Sorry, Chester.

I know a lot of people harbour a good deal of paranoia about immigrants brining "barbaric" values with them to Canada.

I'd like to think that most of the immigrants who come to Canada come here because they share at least most of our values.

Then again, that may make me a slight bit naive.
